The key figure of the jazz community of modern Petersburg is Andrey Kondakov – a pianist of world renown. He gave the inspiration for many international projects and he is the art director of the famous jazz club JFC. Today this club is included in the top 150 best jazz clubs of the world according to the authoritative American magazine “Downbeat”.
The future pianist, keyboardist, composer was born in Dnepropetrovsk, he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatoire. The name Kondakov is inextricably linked with the jazz scene since 1978. Among the works of Andrey Kondakov are music for theater productions and cartoons, he was also the music director of the St. Petersburg International Petropavlovsk Jazz Festival. In the late 80’s, the European festivals were won by a quartet created by pianist Andrey Kondakov and guitarist Andrey Ryabov. In 1994, Kondakov initiated the creation of the project “Interjazz”, which connected together musicians from different countries. In 2005 the St. Petersburg magazine “Musician” named Andrey Kondakov the winner in the nomination “Best keyboard player”. However, the musician continued experiments in many different directions.
In 2009, he released a very successful CD “In Search of the Standard”, in 2011 – the album “Song For My Father”. And the following year Kondakov wrote music for the play “Russian Space” by the works of Platonov – in this performance he also acted as an actor. In the same anniversary year for him, Andrey released a new album “Fairy Tale in the Rain,” and in 2013 – “Russian Romances”. On this disc were presented original versions of Dargomyzhsky’s romances.
For many years Andrey Kondakov does not lose connection with his native city, often comes here for concerts. At the festival “Jazz on the Dnieper” on July 2017, he will present his new album “Electric project”.
